Hey. Hoz here. In this quick video, I’m going to show you how to add social media icons to WordPress. For this example, you’ll see me use my test blog to show you how to insert a social media icons in your WordPress menu.
Adding Social Icons to the WP Menu
Here’s what I cover in the video tutorial:
- where to find some awesome social media icons to use without copyright restrictions
- how to add social media icons to WordPress (in this case, the wp menu)
Once you watch me do the above, you’ll be able to do the same on any WordPress blog. The important thing to note here is that I’m not inserting the icons directly to the theme. We want to avoid doing it this way because that means hardcoding the theme. The issue with that is that if you ever change your theme, you’ll loose your icons!
Tip: whenever you want to add social media icons to WordPress, stick to the navigation menu or the footer.
When dealing with the menu, typically, you would want any icon displaying in your navigation menu as if they were menu items. And obviously, when you click on an icon, you would expect to be taken to the corresponding web page (in this example, Facebook).
In the video, I cover how to do this, and how to make the icons open up the corresponding social property in a new tab, so that you don’t drive traffic away from your blog!Beautifying your WordPress site is part and parcel of having a WordPress site.Click To Tweet
Ok, so the first task is to find social icons that we can use. I’m going to show you an awesome resource that you’re going to want to use over and over again because it’s just awesome.
Let’s say for this example that we’re going to set up a Facebook icon. Obviously, you can apply this process to add as many icons as you want. It’s just a rinse and repeat process.
For this, let’s hit the resource that I mentioned before:
head on over to a website called fontawesome.io
In the video, you will see me visit the font awesome website, which I recommend you familiarize yourself with, especially if you’re engaged in blogging or building websites of any kind because this truly is a great resource.
In the video, I proceed by clicking on the menu item named icons .This takes you to the icons page and there you can see a ton of icons. They’re all classified, which makes it really easy to use. Some icon groups you’ll see include:
- web application icons
- accessibility icons
- social icons
- web application icons
- and more
This is a great place to get icons from and really enhance your website design and experience.
