Hindsight is everything, but achieving hindsight means taking the hits first. The next best thing is to learn from somebody else’s hindsight. It’s a lot less stressful. So with that in mind, I decided to share my blogging journey. If you’re starting out, then here are my top 3 tips on what to know about starting a blog.

I started my blog back in July of 2017, and I’ve learned quite a few things since then, many of which I couldn’t have known at the start of my blogging journey, and many of which I wish I’d known in the beginning.

But somebody starting out doesn’t need an overwhelming list of do’s and don’ts. They just need to know a few key things in order to decide whether blogging is right for them or not.

So let’s take a look at a few things that I think are make-or-break for most beginners.

The 3 Top Tips to Start a Blog

These are my top 3 tips for starting a blog. If you’re interested in knowing more, you can dive into my blogging blueprint for a more in-depth approach as well as a ton of resources that go beyond what to know about starting a blog and actually goes into monetization and other aspects of blogging.

But for now, let’s get on with the top 3 tips.

Tip 1: Decide What to Blog About

This is the first step, and although it seems a no-brainer, I see people asking what should I blog about over and over.

Only you can decide what to start a blog about.

Take time to think about this, because it’s a crucial step. Whatever you decide to start a blog about is what you will be writing for a very long time (hopefully) so make sure it’s the right topic.

Here are some things to consider:

  • choose a topic you enjoy to blog about
  • choose a topic that you know about

That’s it. Don’t overthink this, but don’t underthink it either.

Tip 2: Have a Plan for Your Blog

Planning is crucial. I can’t say this enough times. But don’t let this put you off if you feel you’re not a great planner.

Thankfully, planning is a skill, and you will get better at it if you keep on doing it.

Now, when I say planning, I’m not talking about Roman Empire style planning. Relax. But you do need to have a good idea of where you’re going.

And that means planning.

I see questions like what shall I write a blog about on many forums. Unfortunately, this question reveals how unprepared some people are. Don’t let this be you.

Here is what I suggest:

  • create a simple planner (use Google Spreadsheets or a spreadsheet program)
  • plan your content 1 week in advance, to start with

Knowing what you’ll be blogging about removes a lot of stress from the process. It doesn’t really matter if you deviate from the planned content when you have a new idea because that planned content can be moved into the following week, which naturally fills out your content planner.

Tip 3: Be Consistent

This one is huge. When it comes to what to know about starting a blog, I think many who bail out, cry that it’s hard work. This basically means they couldn’t stick to the schedule.

Being consistent in your blogging effort doesn’t mean that you have to blog every day. Some bloggers publish content once a week and some even less. Having consistency is not really about the frequency of your posting, but rather about being predictable.

Publishing blog content predictably also helps your audience know when to expect content.

Summarizing What to Know About Starting a Blog The Right Way

You don’t actually need to know anything in order to start a blog. You just need to start. But knowing a few things can help determine whether you stick to it or not.

These top 3 tips are really about starting a blog the right way so that you have a much higher chance to succeed.

This is what to know about starting a blog:

  1. Choose your blog topic well – know what to blog about before you start
  2. Plan your content – know what you’re blogging about week to week
  3. Be consistent – let others know when to expect your content
